What is an IBAN, and why does it have check digits?
85 countries use IBAN under the official standard. Most of the world doesn’t — the United States, Canada, Australia, India, China and Japan all use their own local formats.
What “vaild” actually tells you
It does not mean the account exists — no public system will tell you that. It does not mean it belongs to who you think it does; an IBAN carries no name. And it does not mean the money will arrive: a well-formed IBAN for a closed account is still well formed.
For a first payment to a new vendor, confirm the account name with them directly — ideally on a call, not over email. Invoice fraud works by sending a real-looking IBAN from a compromised mailbox, and a valid-looking IBAN is exactly what makes it convincing.
How an IBAN catches its own typos
That single arithmetic check catches the overwhelming majority of real mistakes: a mistyped digit, two characters transposed, a character dropped. It’s why a bank can reject a bad IBAN instantly instead of finding out two days later.
It isn’t perfect. Two errors that happen to cancel out will pass. But for a number typed or pasted by hand, it’s a very good filter — and it costs nothing to run.biggest source of surprise at the end of a job. Gratuity is calculated on the last basic salary stated in your MOHRE-registered contract. Every allowance on top of it is excluded.
What’s inside a UAE IBAN
Not in a UAE IBAN: a branch code, and a SWIFT/BIC code. Neither can be derived from the number, which is why this tool doesn’t show them.
